Charles Maslin's life was a bit of a mystery for my family. My father and uncle grew up living with their grandmother, Alice May West Maslin (affectionately known as "Mose"), but she never spoke of her husband. They knew their grandfather had entered Norristown State Hospital around 1930, supposedly for depression, and that he died there in 1946. But they didn't know much more than that until my uncle was finally able to secure the hospital records in 2014 (medical records are considered confidential and protected by state and federal law; it is difficult to obtain records without consent of the person to whom it pertains - which is especially difficult if said person is dead!). From the records we learned that Charles Maslin was first admitted to Norristown State Hospital on March 8, 1928 and discharged May 7, 1929. He was again admitted August 9, 1929 and discharged December 23, 1930. His third and final admission was September 1, 1932 until his death in 1946. The diagnosis was Dementia Praecox, or bipolar disorder; he was in a deep state of depression when first admitted.
Charles worked as an architect, initially for the firm Perot & Bissell. He later worked for Baltimore Locomotive Works, in Eddystone, PA. Coincidentally, the headquarters building still stands today as an office building, and it is where we take my son to the pediatrician! (See Philadelphia Architects and Buildings Database Here).
