Levering Family
Laura Levering was my great-grandmother on my father's father's side. The Leverings were early settlers of the Roxborough (once called Leverington) neighborhood in Philadelphia, and many streets, a school, and a cemetery bear their names today. Around 1996, my father's cousin Wilson connected with a distant relative who was in possession of a book, Levering Family History and Genealogy, published in 1897 by a Colonel John Levering of Lafayette, Indiana. Through written correspondence, Wilson was able to trace our family line back to the early 17th century. Several years later he obtained his own copy of the printed book, and eagerly shared much information with the rest of our family through a printed three-ring binder (The Cousin Family History Binder).

Usher in the age of technology... and I am happy to report that this informative book has been fully digitized and is available online, for free, through Google Books! The best part of this digitized version (besides its wide accessibility) is that it includes a "search this book" feature, which allows users to input a name or word, and instantly points to those pages where the name or word is referenced.
Levering Family History and Genealogy, by Col. John Levering, 1897.
Levering Family History and Genealogy, by Col. John Levering, 1897.
Col. John Levering's book was an updated version of The Levering Family by Horatio Gates Jones, published in 1858.
HG Jones was also a member of the Levering family, on his mother's side. He was named after his father, Rev. Horatio Gates Jones (founder of the Lower Merion Baptist Church), who was probably named in honor of the Revolutionary War general, Horatio Gates (the father of Rev. HG Jones, David Jones, served as a chaplain in the Revolutionary War). HG Jones lived in Roxborough, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania (1841), and was very much interested in local and family history. He served as Secretary and later Vice President of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and was also a member of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, Moravian Historical Society, and the American Antiquarian Society, among others. He served as a state senator for Pennsylvania from 1874 to 1881. He is buried in Leverington Cemetery.
Col. John Levering's book borrows heavily from this version, sometimes lifting whole passages. The updated 1897 book obviously has more information, but it is nice to see that this first version is also fully digitized and available on Google Books as well.

I am using these books as the basis for my "family tree" for this branch of the family, but I will also include more sources when I have them. I am giving each generation its own page, and including the genealogy chart numbers from the 1897 book, if you wanted to investigate further connections. You can begin at the top of the tree, and click through the linked records within these pages, or jump to a particular name below:
