Col. John Levering wrote: "b. Nov. 23, 1830 (in Lower Merion); m. Sept. 10, 1857, Caroline McLenaghan of Philadelphia. They lived in Manayunk, where he d. July 30, 1885; buried in Lev. Cemetery. Mr. L. was for many years and at the time of his death employed in the surveying and civil engineering departments of the city of Philadelphia." |
The photo on the left is identified as Martha (Trasel) Levering in our Cousin Family History Binder. However, I believe this is Caroline for several reasons: I think that one of my grandfather's sisters wrote "Grandma Levering", making this Caroline. Also, I am not sure exactly when this photo was taken, or when Entrekin opened his Main Street, Manayunk studio. I do not find it listed in the 1864 city directory, but it is there in 1865. Martha died in 1865. Even if this photo was taken in the 1860s, I think this looks like a woman in her 30s, not her 70s.
My father inherited from his father, a copy of Freemasonry in Roxborough: The History of Roxborough Lodge No. 135, published by the Centennial Committee of Roxborough Lodge, No. 135, Free and Accepted Masons, Philadelphia, 1913. [The Historical Society of Pennsylvania also has a copy]
This book records the first 100 year history of the lodge, and lists past members, with a short biography (and sometimes a portrait) of each past master. John H. Levering's biography is on page 184.
Residence - 199 Green Lane, Manayunk
John H. and Caroline Levering made their home on Green Lane, two doors above the First Baptist Church. I looked at Philadelphia City Directories at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (years 1875 and 1885), and found that John H. Levering's residence was 199 Green Lane, Manayunk. His office was listed as 217 Mulberry Street (now Carson Street). Looking at the 1875 real estate atlas on The Greater Philadelphia GeoHistory Network website , here, it looks like John H. owned one long plot connecting the two streets. And lived two doors down from neighbor W.G. Entrekin, whose photography studio on Main Street took many of our family photos, including the ones above!
